The emergency medical care system in America is among the best of the best. However, the rest of our healthcare system is a horse of a different color. A more appropriate description would be "sickness" care. Despite the fact that the U.S. spends more money on health care than any other nation, it ranks just 34th in the world in life expectancy.
Our healthcare system is focused on disease "treatment" rather than disease "prevention". Doctors don't have the necessary time to discuss our health issues in any depth. Prescription medications are handed out like candy. Unfortunately, drugs only "manage" the disease and do little or nothing about the underlying cause; not to mention the long list of undesirable side effects associated with using prescription medications. Even medical research is geared toward treatment and not prevention. The big pharmaceutical companies have their influence in that arena. Just watch the relentless pharmaceutical commercials on television. Is it in our best interest to allow "Big Pharma" to tell us what medications we should be taking? Do you know how many people die each year as a result of correctly administered doses of legal prescription drugs!
Our population is overweight, out-of-shape, chronically tired, and over-stressed. It's no wonder we are unhappy. If you are concerned about your health and longevity, you must make it happen on your own. You can't rely on our current health system. Your focus needs to be on pro-active preventative health care. If you stay healthy, you won't need treatment. It can be that simple. It's your life. Don't settle for anything less!

I received my training to practice health counseling at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in Manhattan. The opportunity to study with leading wellness educators including Drs. Neil Barnard, Andrew Weil, Bernie Siegel, Barry Sears, Walter Willett, and T. Colin Campbell; and leaders in nutrition and personal development, such as Geneen Roth, David Wolfe, Sally Fallon and Howard Lyman, among others, has been invaluable.

About Michael
Since my early days of playing sports in high school and college, fitness and health have always been a part of my life.
Competing in men's league basketball until the age of 50, coupled with other regular exercise over the years has kept me very fit and healthy. The very physical aspect of my lifelong career as a farrier has also been a favorable health factor in my life. I currently weigh the same as I did in college.
My eating habits were a different story. My diet varied from junk to health food and everywhere in between. However, I did begin to eat healthier as the years rolled on. The healthier I ate, the better I felt. Meeting my wife, Cathy, in 2001 really supercharged my health and lifestyle. Cathy is a Certified Holistic Health Counselor and works with people who are addicted to dieting for weight loss. Her anti-diet program is revolutionary. Thanks to her knowledge and professional advice, my eating and health habits are better than ever.
In 2010 I turned 62, but I certainly don't feel it. I run regularly with a group of younger friends and I still feel like I did in my forties. By following a few simple guidelines I am able to maintain optimal health and fitness and promote longevity.
I received my training and certification to practice Health Coaching at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, which is the only nutrition school integrating all the different dietary theories—combining the knowledge of traditional philosophies with modern concepts like the USDA food pyramid, the glycemic index, the Zone and raw foods. I am also an AADP Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner.
Currently I am a student at the Connecticut Institute for Herbal Studies, enrolled in the Certified Chinese Herbology Program. Upon completion of this course of study in February, 2011, I will receive my cetification as a Chinese Hebologist.
There is no magic pill for health, but there are many secrets. And I am willing to share them.
